Ride or Lose Your Turn: Why Playing It Safe Is Costing You Success

When I was a kid, my brother, sister, and I shared one big bicycle. Three kids. One bike. My mom’s motto? “Share and share alike.”
My brother and sister loved to ride. They’d zoom through the neighborhood, laughing, exploring, going farther and farther. Me? I played it safe. I wasn’t confident riding that big a bike, so I walked it. I “took my turn” the safe way—by not actually riding at all.
They came back glowing, while I stayed in my little loop, going around the same block.
Until one day, my brother shouted at me:
“Ride or lose your turn!”
That fear of missing out jolted me awake. I hopped on, wobbly and unsure—and suddenly I was free. I was riding.
Here’s the thing: most entrepreneurs are still walking their bike.
They’re playing it safe. Waiting. Thinking the timing isn’t right. Holding back from going all-in.
And while they walk, someone else is riding straight into the opportunities they’ve been craving.
And yes—this “safe” choice has a cost.
Lost money.
Lost time.
Lost opportunity.
Lost turns.
If you’re honest, you know exactly where this is happening in your business right now.
Playing It Safe Looks Like…
- Taking action but staying in your comfort zone.
- Over-preparing instead of actually launching.
- Doubting yourself every time something doesn’t work.
- Saying, “I’ll start tomorrow” … and stacking up lost tomorrows.
- Working harder but not seeing the bigger results you crave.
The truth? Playing it safe is keeping you stuck on the same block.
It’s exhausting—and it won’t get you where you want to go.
Riding Is Your Birthright
You weren’t born to play small. You weren’t designed to walk the bike while others ride past you.
You were born to ride—to take bold, aligned action that creates freedom, income, impact, and joy.
And yes, it takes courage. It takes consistency. It takes being willing to risk falling so you can discover how far you can go.
Because here’s the secret: riding is what makes everything easier.
The moment you start riding, you gain momentum.
You stop circling the same house and start exploring entirely new neighborhoods—new clients, new opportunities, new possibilities you couldn’t even see before.
Three Things to Focus on While You Ride
- Be an Implementor. Don’t just read about success—live it. Create a vision, set goals, take action, assess results, adjust. Success isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what matters, consistently.
- Invest in Yourself. Growth doesn’t happen in isolation. The fastest way forward is through mentorship, coaching, and surrounding yourself with people who expand your vision instead of shrinking it.
- Take Risks. Growth is uncomfortable. That’s the point. Learn to be comfortable in the discomfort. Every risk stretches you into the next version of yourself and your business.
Your Habits Are Either Helping You Ride—or Keeping You Walking
Most entrepreneurs don’t even realize they’re being driven by old habits and thought patterns.
Paradigms picked up in childhood. Voices that say, “Don’t fall. Play it safe. Stay small.”
But here’s the good news: you have the power to change it.
That’s why I teach my clients the AIRR Method—a simple, powerful way to shift thought habits and rewire your results.
- Awareness: Notice the words and thoughts that are running your show.
- Interrupt: Catch them. Stop the old cycle with a phrase like “Up until now…”
- Release: Let the thought go. Imagine it floating away like a balloon.
- Replace: Choose a new, empowering thought that expands what’s possible.
Then take action to ground the new thought.
When you shift even one thought, you shift your trajectory. A one-degree change today can land you in an entirely different reality down the road.
Time to Ride
At every moment, you’re making a choice:
- Retreat to comfort and lose your turn.
- Or step up, take the risk, and ride.
